The Smiling Pioneer of Household Appliances Creates New Value for BrandsIndustrial Development Bureau, MOEA

To segment and identify foreign and domestic goods, ensure the rights and benefits of domestic manufacturers, shape the value of brands produced in Taiwan, and define the characteristics of genuine goods for fair prices as well as give domestic consumers an excellent environmen , the Industrial Development Bureau is continuing to actively promote the MIT Smile logo for household appliances made in Taiwan  as well as a quality inspection system. MIT Smile logo household appliances have been manufactured in Taiwan and are genuine goods for a fair price. The bureau has already designated 36 items, including air conditioners, refrigerators, electric fans, dish dryers, blenders, ceiling fans, washing machines, air purifiers, and dehumidifiers, as meeting the standards for the quality inspection system.

There are four particular meanings for promoting the MIT Smile logo system for household appliances. First of all, it guarantees that the product was made in Taiwan. Secondly, using electrical safety standards, food container safety standards, energy-saving and carbon-reducing standards, and other such measures for quality inspection to upgrade the quality of genuine goods for a fair price ensures that domestic consumers can safely use the domestic products. Third, it urges the household appliance industry to move towards self-contained research and development, brands, services, sales and so on in Taiwan, adding high value to the development of top-level chains.  Furthermore, it provides consumers with safer and more humanistic, aesthetic, and energy-saving goods using smart technology.
Finally, the system can prevent corrupt dealers from counterfeiting goods manufactured in Taiwan and acquiring improper benefits.  Moreover, it provides both domestic and foreign consumers with durable, energy-saving, safe, and fair priced excellent quality home appliances. When consumers are at the marketplace making a purchase, all they need to do is check that the product has an MIT Smile logo label issued by the Industrial Development Bureau affixed to it.  Then they can rest assured they are buying a genuine, Taiwan-made home appliance for a fair price.

The MIT Smile logo stands for Taiwanese brands. After four years of toil, the logo has already received the approval and support of domestic dealers of household appliances and  acceptance from consumers. As of January 8th of this year (2014), 94 household appliance dealers  had already passed the inspections.  Altogether, 5,193 products have obtained the MIT Smile logo for household products made in Taiwan. The penetration rate of items has already reached 92%. The market share of domestically produced household appliances  had never before reached 40%, but now it has increased to 53.1%. It can be seen that the MIT Smile logo not only meets the needs of consumers for household appliances of higher value, but it also strengthens the confidence consumers have in their purchases. This increases the degree of brand loyalty for the MIT Smile logo. Foreign home appliances create an obstacle difficult for brands to surpass.

The Industrial Development Bureau is currently promoting the MIT Smile logo system for Taiwan-made home appliances. The logo is not only the first successful step to reinvigorating the household appliance industry, but also guarantees that consumers can feel relieved they are buying Taiwanese-made home appliances that are genuine and for a fair price. It has enabled manufacturers and consumers to both obtain win-win strategies and goals. In the future, under the guidance of policy, dealers joining forces to operate, and consumers supporting the use of domestic goods, the bureau hopes to be able to revive the home appliance industry.
